Tokyo stocks fall 0.98 pct on weak U.S. data

Tokyo stocks fell 0.98 percent Thursday as investor sentiment was undermined by weaker-than- expected U.S. retail data released overnight.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average was down 194.48 points, from Wednesday at 19,570.24. The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange lost 12.72 points, or 0. 79 percent, to 1,591.49.

Decliners were led by banks, land, transport and logistics.

The turnover was 2.776 trillion yen (about 23.31 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
