Rio Pro halted by flat conditions

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Organizers called off Wednesday's opening round heats at the Rio Pro due to flat conditions at Barra da Tijuca beach.

"We had a long look at it this morning, but ultimately decided to call a lay day for competition," World Surf League commissioner Kieren Perrow said. "Conditions are projected to improve in the coming days so we'll be back tomorrow morning to have another look at it."

It was the second time in three days that competition has been stalled by a lack of swell.

In the only day of action so far, 11-time world champions Kelly Slater posted the highest score with a two-wave total of 19.27 in a vintage display of tube riding.

Defending world champion and local hero Gabriel Medina was also among Tuesday's heat winners. Endite
