Proposed EU refugees plan to provide "massive" relief for Austria: minister

Xinhua, May 14, 2015 Adjust font size:

Austrian Minister of the Interior Johanna Mikl-Leitner said Wednesday the newly-proposed distribution of refugees into European Union member states by way of a quota system would provide "massive" relief for Austria.

The plan unveiled by the European Commission on Wednesday would mean Austria should take in 2.62 percent of refugees arriving, with those who come by sea to Greece or Italy divided up among EU countries by these percentages as part of the quotas.

"Going by this model Austria, would take in 2 percent of all refugees in Europe -- currently we take in about 5 percent," Mikl-Leitner wrote in a statement addressed to the Austria Press Agency.

She said the proposal is "remarkable," and that "one may also be briefly delighted," urging details to be resolved quickly and a rapid implementation of the proposal. Endit
