Slater shows class in opening round of Rio Pro

Xinhua, May 13, 2015 Adjust font size:

Surfing legend Kelly Slater and defending world champion Gabriel Medina were among the heat winners in the opening round of the Rio Pro on Tuesday.

Slater's two-wave score of 19.27 was the day's best while local hero Medina progressed to the next round with 12.33.

"I didn't sleep very well and would have liked another lay day to train some more but I felt great," Slater was quoted as saying by the World Surf League website.

"The waves were good and I tried to get the biggest of the sets that provided good barrels. In waves like those today you have to trust your instincts and not be too ambitious. You have to understand the wave to make the most of it and that's what I did."

It was a day dominated by Brazilians with the host nation providing six heat winners.

They included Medina, Italo Ferreira (14.07), Filipe Toledo (16.27), Wiggolly Dantas (15.97), Adriano de Souza (17.90) and Jadson Andre (14.04). Endi
