The fifth edition of the International Festival of Ethnographic Films kicked off here on Monday evening, featuring 26 documentaries made in Africa, Europe, America, and Asia.
The selection, made from among more than 80 titles received from all over the world, shows cultural diversity united around issues like cultural heritage, migration, environment, kinship and globalization.
Films about wonderful carpets made in the Bulgarian village of Chiprovci, and the last broom-maker in Dobra village, Romania, opened the six-day event, held in support of UNESCO's 70th anniversary celebrations.
Viewers can also enjoy films about Bulgarian fire dancers, South India's region of Wayanad, effects of the global warming and specifically of the super typhoon Haiyan which hit the Philippines in 2013, an ethnic group of Colombian Amazon, or a Kelabit highland, an isolated settlement in the heart of Borneo.
Associate Professor Veselin Tepavicharov, Head of the Department of Ethnology at the Sofia University, one of the event's coorganizers, said at the opening ceremony that the festival has already become an institution in this sphere with broadened influence.
He added that the ethnographic film festivals are rare globally, and he was convinced that this festival would further contribute to the promotion of visual anthropology. Endit
