A 5.0-magnitude earthquake in the sea off Miaoli County in the northwest of Taiwan occurred at 4:38 p.m. Monday (Beijing Time), the China Earthquake Networks Center said.

The epicenter was monitored at 24.5 degrees north latitude and 120.6 degrees east longitude, at a depth of 10 kilometers, according to the center.

This is the fifth strongest earthquake within 30 kilometers since 1900, said Kevin Kuo, director of Taiwan's earthquake monitoring department. The strongest, measuring 6.0 magnitude, occurred on July 17, 1935.

Another earthquake measuring 4.2 magnitude jolted the same region at 4:53 p.m., at a depth of 5 kilometers, according to the Taiwan earthquake monitoring department.

No casualties has been reported. Endi
