Poles went to the polls Sunday in a presidential election that is likely to put incumbent President Bronislaw Komorowski in a second five-year term.

BAGHDAD -- A total of 28 people were killed, including three suicide bombers, and over 28 others wounded in bomb attacks and clashes with the Islamic State (IS) militants across Iraq on Sunday, while gunmen abducted nine people in eastern the country, security sources said.

In Iraq's western province of Anbar, heavy clashes erupted between the Iraqi security forces and allied militias, known as Hashd Shaabi, or Popular Mobilization, and the IS militants in south of the IS-held city of Fallujah, some 50 km west of the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, a provincial security source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. GENEVA -- At least five people were confirmed dead after local residents reported hearing gunshots Saturday night in the northern Swiss town of Wurenlingen, police said.

Police said the dead bodies were discovered outside a residential building in the town near the border with Germany, but local media reported that the death toll may rise to eight as more bodies were later found inside the building. (Switzerland-Shooting)

MOSCOW -- Russian President Vladimir Putin reiterated Sunday that the Ukraine crisis should only be solved through political dialogue.

"I am convinced that a reliable, long-term settlement can only be achieved by establishing direct dialogue between Kiev, (the two self-proclaimed republics of) Donetsk and Lugansk," Putin said during a meeting with visiting German Chancellor Angela Merkel at the Kremlin. (Russia-Germany-Ukraine)

SKOPJE -- Eight policemen and 14 gunmen have been killed in an operation against armed group in northern Macedonia, the government confirmed on Sunday.

The police operation, which started on Saturday morning, in the northern Macedonian town of Kumanovo ended on Sunday and the police managed to completely disable the armed group hiding in this town, said spokesperson of the Macedonian Interior Ministry Ivo Kotevski. (Macedonia-Police Operation) Endi
