1st LD: 2 firefighters missing in downtown Mumbai fire

Xinhua, May 10, 2015 Adjust font size:

At least two firefighters went missing and three others injured when a four-story building in South Mumbai's Kalba Devi area collapsed after catching fire on Saturday, said Indian police.

The decades-old building, Gokul Nivas, is in the downtown area of India's financial hub. A portion of it was undergoing renovation when it caught fire.

It had residential apartments on the fourth floor and housed cloth godowns and shops on the lower floors.

At least two people were rescued from the building minutes before it collapsed, while all the residents in the house were said to be safe, said local TV channel NDTV.

There was no one inside when the structure came down, the report quoted policemen as saying.

The blaze had started around 16:00 p.m. (1130 GMT) and fire engines took a long time to get access to it due to the narrow lanes.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Endi
