China releases rare fish fry to rivers bordering Russia

Xinhua, May 8, 2015 Adjust font size:

Fishery authorities in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province released 2 million rare salmon fry into the Heilong and Wusuli rivers along the Sino-Russia border.

According to local authorities of Fuyuan County on Thursday, 1.5 million fry were released into the Wusuli River, and 500,000 in the Heilong River, to bolster stock and maintain bio-diversity.

It takes about six months until salmon fry hatchlings are ready for release, when they are about five to six centimeters long. They will swim for two months to the Bering Sea and return to the rivers after sexual maturity to breed.

There are plans to release more than 10 species of fish fry into the rivers between June and October.

Fuyuan County boasts abundant fishery resources. It has released over 600 million rare fish fry into the two rivers since the 1980s.

China and Russia signed an agreement on the protection of resources in border rivers in 1994. Both countries have cooperated in areas such as fishery patrols and environmental protection on the rivers. Enditem
