Contact Group on Ukraine meets in Minsk

Xinhua, May 6, 2015 Adjust font size:

The three-party Contact Group on the Ukraine crisis has started its meeting in the Belarusian capital of Minsk, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

According to the ministry, participants of the meeting are special representative of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe Heidi Tagliavini, former Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma, Russian representative Azamat Kulmukhametov and representatives of the self-proclaimed republics of Donetsk and Lugansk, Denis Pushilin and Vladislav Deynego.

The closed-door meeting, which took place at the President Hotel in downtown Minsk, is aimed at working toward a diplomatic solution to the ongoing armed conflict in Ukraine.

Clashes between Kiev and pro-independence insurgents have not been rarely heard since the cease-fire came into force on Feb. 15 following the new agreement clinched in Minsk, with the two sides frequently blaming each other for violations of the truce.

The conflict in the country's eastern regions, which started in April 2014, has killed over 6,100 people and wounded more than 15,400 others, according to the latest UN estimates. Endi
