Two UN peacekeepers under the Intervention Brigade of the UN Mission for Stabilization of Congo (MONUSCO) were killed on Tuesday evening in North Kivu province, East of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo), a UN source said Wednesday.

The two peacekeepers of Tanzanian origin, were killed during an ambush by Ugandan ADF rebels in Beni territory, during which 13 others were injured and four were reported missing.

"The UN peacekeepers were attacked in an ambush when they were on normal patrol duties around Mavivi camp within Beni town," the same source told Xinhua.

A statement released on Tuesday night by MONUSCO confirmed that the attack had left some peacekeepers dead and several others injured.

Contacted by Xinhua, DR Congo Armed Forces affirmed that "they had deployed reinforcements immediately after being alerted of the ambush." Endi
