1 killed, 14 missing in Indonesia's West Java landslide

Xinhua, May 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

One people was killed and at least 14 people others missing after a landslide hit a village in Indonesia's West Java province on Tuesday, a senior official said.

The landslide crushed eight houses in Margamukti village in Pangalengan subdistrict, Bandung regency. Rescuers evacuated one body from the mud. Eight people, who suffered injuries, were treated in the nearest hospital, the Disaster Mitigation Agency ( BNPB) spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said.

"The dead was an elder man aged 50. It estimated that 14 people were still buried by the mud," Sutopo told Xinhua.

Efforts to search those buried by the mud were still underway, carried out by joint teams from regional disaster mitigation agency (BPBD), troops, police and volunteers.

"Two backhoes have been deployed in the location. The search efforts are focused around those houses swept away by the landslide," Sutopo said.

BPBD officials have issued warnings to local residents around the disaster site about cracks in slope of the hills near their neighborhood after days of heavy downpour.

The landslide also damaged pipes of geothermal gas operated by Star Energy Geothermal. Endi
