1st LD Writethru: India inducts supersonic surface-to-air Akash missile into its army

Xinhua, May 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

India Tuesday inducted into its army its home-made supersonic surface-to-air Akash missile that can target enemy helicopters and aircraft up to 25 kms, sources said.

The missile has been developed by the state-owned Defense Research and Development Organization in a bid to strengthen the country's air defense system.

The missile is likely to be deployed along the country's western borders, the sources said.

Indian Army chief General Dalbir Singh Suhag has described Akash as "a step towards self-realization of indigenization".

The missile, which was inducted into the army more than three decades after the project was conceptualized, can simultaneously target multiple enemy aerial vehicles. Endi
