Philippine gov't ensures safety in Metro Manila after terror threat

Xinhua, May 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

A senior Philippine official on Tuesday assured the public that the government would focus on maintaining peace and order in Metro Manila, the country's capital, despite recent terror threats from Muslims rebels.

Communications secretary Herminio Coloma Jr. said at a press conference that law enforcement authorities would keep everyone safe.

Earlier, Abu Misri Mama, spokesman of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF), said BIFF members are now in Metro Manila and other parts of the country, waiting for a go-signal to launch attacks and terrorist activities.

The Armed Forces of the Philippines launched an all-out- offensive against the BIFF from Feb. 25 to March 25, leaving 139 BIFF members killed and 53 others injured.

The BIFF is the armed wing of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Movement, which broke away from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front due to disagreements over the conduct of peace negotiations with the Philippine government. Endi
