Lithuanian president decides to sack education minister

Xinhua, May 5, 2015 Adjust font size:

Lithuania's president Dalia Grybauskaite said on Monday she has decided to sack the country's education and science minister Dainius Pavalkis who submitted his resignation last week.

"We see a phenomenon on Lithuania's political arena when highly wrong methods are employed, and the minister clearly cannot work under such conditions, therefore, I cannot force him (to stay)," Grybauskaite was quoted as saying by BNS news agency.

The incumbent minister decided to step down after the leadership of Labor Party that delegated him to the government accused him of failing to implement the program of the party and the government.

"There are no chances to proceed with work in this situation, with no support from Labor Party, from its fraction in the parliament," Pavalkis explained his decision last week.

The Labor Party's presidium is to identify new candidates to the office on Tuesday.

Grybauskaite insisted she would check any new proposed candidates thoroughly and with the help of law-enforcement institutions, if needed.

"I will choose from a few, if none are suitable, I will proceed to a few more," the head of state said. Endit
