Stabbing attempt thwarted in Jerusalem

Xinhua, May 4, 2015 Adjust font size:

Israeli security guards shot and injured a Palestinian man who allegedly tried to stab people in Jerusalem on Monday, a police spokesperson confirmed.

The man was slightly injured, police spokesperson Mickey Rosenfeld said of the incident at a light rail station in French Hill area in Jerusalem.

The suspect, whom the Ha'aretz daily reported to be 35 years old, was sent to a hospital for treatment.

In recent months, some light rail stations were damaged in clashes between Palestinians and Israeli security forces.

In July 2014, railway services stopped in east Jerusalem Palestinian neighborhoods amid damage caused by local residents following the murder of a 15-year-old Palestinian by Israeli right-wing extremists.

There have also been cases of stone throwing and vehicular attacks at light railway stations in Jerusalem.

Approximately 300,000 Palestinians live in east Jerusalem, on lands Israel annexed in the 1967 Mideast War. They live in close quarters with poor infrastructure. Despite permanent residency, they are not allowed to vote in national elections. Endit
