Brazilian swimmer Sarah Correa, a silver medalist at the 2011 Pan American Games, has died after being hit by a car while waiting at a bus stop in Rio de Janeiro.
The 22-year-old was declared brain dead after being taken unconscious to Miguel Couto hospital, according to a Facebook post on Saturday by her mother, Maria Fatima Alves Goncalves.
Another pedestrian, 58-year-old Paulo Soares, was also struck by the vehicle and died before paramedics arrived, the Globo news portal said.
The driver is understood to have fled the scene before turning himself in to police.
In another Facebook post, Maria Fatima said her daughter had been "murdered". "I want justice and I won't rest until that happens," she wrote.
Correa was part of Brazil's 4x200m freestyle relay team that took silver at the 2011 Pan American Games in Guadalajara, Mexico.
She retired from swimming in October last year to focus on a burgeoning modeling career. Endi
