Defending champion Li Xiaoxia out of table tennis worlds

Xinhua, May 2, 2015 Adjust font size:

Defending champion Li Xiaoxia of China was knocked out of the women's singles at the world table tennis championships by teammate Liu Shiwen here on Saturday.

Li, who looked uncomfortable against a fast-paced Liu in the semifinal, lost at 6-11, 11-8, 9-11, 7-11, 8-11.

"I didn't perform well today. I haven't been in my best condition since I came here. Losing is actually a good thing to me. I haven't been training normally for more than a year. I felt a little afraid when facing a strong opponent like Liu," said Li, also the 2012 London Olympics champion.

"I can't keep up with her. If I can I might last longer in the game. I didn't play aggressively. I tried to bring my best performance but I can't."

Fans are hoping for a repeat of the London Olympic Games final where Li beat world number one Ding Ning for the gold, but now it's Liu who will pose challenge to Ding in the world championships final.

"Liu played more aggressively than me. She wanted to win more than I did," Li said of her opponent Liu, the world number two. Endi
