14 years old Japanese rising star advances into last eight at table tennis worlds

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Japanese rising star Mima Ito advainced into the women's singles quarterfinals as the 14 years old teenager defeated Tetyana Bilenko of Ukraine 4-1 at the World Table Tennis Championships on Friday.

Ito, who has been the only Japanese player left in the women's singles last eight and even in the round of 16, made short work of Bilenko 11-5, 11-8, 10-12, 11-9, 12-10.

Ito is hoping to create more history as she's become the youngest ever World Tour singles title holder after winning the 2015 German Open at 14 years and 152 days old this season.

The surging girl jumped to fame last year, together with partner Miu Hirano, by becoming the youngest duo to win a World Tour doubles title.

Asked about whether her compatriot and star player Ai Fukuhara gave her any tips for the match, she said: "Yes, but just some small tips. She said that I had beaten Bilenko before, so I just need to play as usual. I feel very happy to win. Before the tournament, I didn't expect to go this far."

Coming up next for her will be China's defending champion Li Xiaoxia. Endi
