Niger cancels Labour Day festivities, to hold joint prayers

Nigerien workers, saddened by the death of tens of their fellow citizens during last Saturday's terrorist attack by Boko Haram in the extreme eastern region of Karamga, have decided to cancel the normal May 1 festivities, a trade union source said.

"Instead of the festivities, joint prayers will be organized in memory of the victims in Niamey and other parts of the country," the Federation of Nigerien Workers' Unions said in a statement on Thursday.

Following the attack by the Nigerian terrorist group in the Lake Chad Basin, 46 Nigerien soldiers were killed, nine were injured and 32 are still missing.

Niger's Interior Minister Hassoumi Massaoudou said 28 villagers were equally killed in the attack.

The Nigerien government declared a three day national mourning period, between April 29 to May 1, 2015.

In Niger, just like in other countries, Labour Day is celebrated each year with festivities organized by various trade unions in different parts of the country. Endi
