Brazil's president urges stricter rules on outsourcing

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff Thursday called for greater regulation on outsourcing, saying a bill that would relax current restrictions on outsourcing should not lead to job insecurity.

Brazil's current laws allow outsourcing services that are secondary to a company's main activity, such as cleaning and maintenance or security. The bill, already passed by the Lower House, is currently being discussed in the Senate, and would let firms outsource all their activities.

"It is urgent and necessary to regulate outsourcing, so that millions of workers have job security and decent salaries," Rousseff said. "It is also important for business owners, because clear rules on outsourcing lead to more security for them as well."

Even if the bill is approved by the Senate, Rousseff can veto parts of the law she disagrees with.

Rousseff also took the opportunity to tout government measures in favor of labor, including raising the minimum wage, improving workers' purchasing power and maintaining the employment rate despite the international financial crisis. Endi
