Ireland's unemployment at lowest levels since early 2009

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Ireland's unemployment continued to fall, bringing unemployment below 350,000 for the first time since February 2009, according to official figures on Thursday.

Over 140,000 people left the Live Register to take up work in the last 12 months, according to the figures from the Central Statistics Office (CSO).

The Live Register in Ireland is used to provide monthly data on the number of people registering for unemployment assistance.

According to the CSO, all regions of the country saw a drop in unemployment in the last year, with the Midwest recording the largest drop at 13.8 percent.

All regions of the country saw a drop in unemployment in the last month as well, with the largest drops in the West, Midwest and the Southwest, it said.

Irish Deputy Prime Minister Joan Burton welcomed Thursday's unemployment figures, saying that these figures are further evidence of the strength of the jobs-led recovery that is firmly under way.

"I'm determined to see unemployment fall below 9 percent by year's end," she said. Endit
