Munich documentation center opens 70 years after end of WWII

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Munich Documentation Center for the History of National Socialism officially opened on Thursday at a symbolic location here 70 years after the end of World War II.

The new center, located at Munich's Koenigsplatz square where the Nazis burned books that contradicted their racist ideology in 1933, is to provide Munich with a central place of learning and remembrance.

"It is our responsibility to provide places of remembrance, commemoration, as well as democracy education in Munich, so that it will never happen again," said Mayor of Munich Dieter Reiter during the opening ceremony.

Monika Gruetters, federal government commissioner for culture and the media, Horst Seehofer, minister-president of Bavaria and Prof. Winfried Nerdinger founding director of the center also attended Thursday's ceremony.

According to Nerdinger, the opening of the documentation center is a clear sign for Munich to separate itself from its history and give the information "never again."

The center, open to the public from May 1, offers a permanent exhibition, a learning center with media and research opportunities, special exhibitions, as well as diverse educational and event programs.

It is free of charge for public until the end of July. Endit
