Interview: Strasbourg has potential to be urban culture capital, says deputy mayor

Xinhua, May 1, 2015 Adjust font size:

Strasbourg has the potential to be a capital for urban culture, Mathieu Cahn, Vice-President of the Eurometropole of Strasbourg and Deputy Mayor in charge of youth and urban cultures, said Thursday.

"Strasbourg is not just the city of the Christmas Market," Cahn said, referring to Strasbourg's status as the "Capital of Christmas." Strasbourg was voted the Best Christmas Market in Europe for the second consecutive year in 2015.

"Strasbourg is also a youth city, a city on the move," he added.

Cahn was addressing a press conference for the NL contest, an international festival of urban cultures that will begin on May 22 in Strasbourg.

NL Contest 2014 welcomed over 450 competitors from 15 countries. In addition to sports competitions, the event will hold live concerts, nightlife events, and an exhibitor's village, all oriented around the theme of urban culture.

Urban culture is a term used to refer to a diverse group of non-traditional sports, art forms, and cultural practices that are associated with alternative and city communities. Hip-hop music, graffiti art, and skateboarding are iconic, though non-exhaustive, examples of urban culture.

Strasbourg is the seat of several international institutions, including the European Parliament. It also hosts the annual European Fair. Endit
