Five days after Saturday's massive earthquake, millions of Nepalese people are still in desperate need of disaster relief as their country grapples with all sorts of huge challenges posed by the disaster.

The 7.9-magnitude earthquake, the Himalayan country's worst in eight decades, has so far claimed more than 5,000 lives and injured over 10,000 others. A total of 8 million people, more than a quarter of Nepal's population, were affected. (Nepal-Earthquake-Rescue)

GAZA -- United Nations Middle East special coordinator Nickolay Mladenov on Thursday called on Israel to end a blockade imposed on the Gaza Strip for over seven years.

"Any visitor to Gaza can't hold back his shock after seeing the substantial destruction," Mladenov told a news briefing. "I believe the Israeli blockade imposed on Gaza must be lifted." (Palestine-UN-Israel)

MOSCOW -- Top leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) Kim Jong Un has canceled his planned visit to Moscow for the Victory Day celebration on May 9, the Kremlin said Thursday.

"We were informed of the decision via diplomatic channels ... The leader cited interior affairs in his country as the reason for his absence," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. (Russia-DPRK-Kim)

BAMAKO -- Mediators in Mali's peace process have called for an emergency session of the Joint Technical Security Commission of the Algiers mediation process to discuss rising tension in Northern Mali, a statement from the mediation team indicated on Wednesday.

The statement noted that the mediators were "extremely concerned by the prevailing tensed climate and insecurity in the said zones."
