Spanish PM hosts Egyptian President El-Sisi in Madrid

Xinhua, April 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy on Thursday received Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, marking the first official visit to Spain by an Egyptian leader since 2004.

El-Sisi was accompanied by the Egyptian ministers for foreign affairs, oil, investment, transport, electricity and renewable energy, as well as the National Suez Canal Authority .

An agreement to promote a high-speed AVE train link between the Egyptian cities of Cairo and Luxor was signed on Thursday, a "first step" towards further cooperation in the field, according to both leaders.

Only China has a bigger network of high-speed rail lines than Spain. Spanish technology was also behind the construction of the high-speed rail link between the Saudi Arabian cities of Medina and Mecca.

The two leaders also discussed the results of an economic conference held mid-March in Egypt where El-Sisi presented his economic program and investment opportunities for Spanish companies.

Rajoy and El-Sisi touched on regional affairs such as terrorism, the Middle East peace process and immigration from north Africa towards the southern coast of Europe.

The leader also signed a series of agreements in issues such as security, law and order, as well as in tourism and infrastructure and transport networks. Endit
