Belgium extends presence of soldiers on streets

Xinhua, April 30, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Belgian government agreed on Thursday to extend the length of time military personnel are deployed on its streets as part of the country's counter-terrorist measures.

The Council of Ministers extended the military presence for an additional month, until June 1, Le Soir reported.

This will see 210 soldiers on Belgian streets guarding certain sensitive locations. The threat level of terrorist activities was raised in the wake of the uncovering of a major jihadist cell in Verviers in January, which saw multiple people arrested throughout the country.

The current terrorist threat level in Belgium is assessed at 2 out of 4, with the exception of certain locations deemed to be at a higher risk and therefore in need of military protection.

A new threat evaluation will be made within a month. Enditem
