2 soldiers, 1 civilian killed in northern Mali

Two Malian soldiers and a civilian were killed on Wednesday morning by unknown individuals in the northern part of the country, local sources told Xinhua.

The victims included the head of the Goundam platoon in Timbuktu region, his assistant and his son.

The sources said the armed assailants broke into the home of the head of the platoon at 5:00 a.m. (local time) and killed the three individuals.

The assailants then exchanged fire with Malian soldiers in Goundam before driving off in the pick up vehicle belonging to the platoon head.

Contacted on phone by Xinhua, the director of information for Malian army confirmed the attack took place and that three people, including the head of the platoon had been killed. Endi
