Finnish Center Party chair Sipila leads new parliament

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

Finnish Center Party chair Juha Sipila was elected as the speaker of the Finnish Parliament, the Parliament said Tuesday.

The Center Party won the parliamentary election of 2015 on April 19. According to common practice, its chairman Sipila will be the next prime minister of Finland.

In voting held on Tuesday, Sipila defeated his rival, the Finns Party chair Timo Soini, by a staggering 194 votes (out of 200 votes) to one, and was voted as the interim speaker of the Parliament.

Soini was elected as the first deputy speaker with 185 votes. Ben Zyskowicz, an MP of the National Coalition Party, was voted as the second deputy speaker with 193 votes.

Sipila is now leading negotiations to form a new government. After he was voted as the interim speaker, he will be responsible for running the Parliament during the negotiations.

Also on Tuesday, outgoing Prime Minister Alexander Stubb submitted his resignation to President Sauli Niinisto. Stubb will continue as the prime minister until the new government is formed. Endit
