AU concerned by attacks on Darfur peacekeepers

Xinhua, April 29, 2015 Adjust font size:

The African Union (AU) has been deeply concerned by the attacks on the United Nations (UN)-AU peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID), its statement said on Tuesday.

Unidentified armed groups launched two successive attacks on the mission on April 23 and 24 in Kass, South Darfur, with one Ethiopian peacekeeper dead, four gunmen killed and five other peacekeepers injured, according to a UN report.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, strongly condemned the attacks on the UNAMID which is deployed to assist in stabilizing the Darfur area, said the statement.

Dlamini-Zuma deeply regretted the loss of life in the attacks, and demanded "a transparent and fair investigation into the incidents", so as to "swiftly bring the perpetrators to justice."

She welcomed the commitment of the UNAMID to cooperate fully with the Sudanese government, in order to avoid a recurrence of such incidents.

She reiterated AU's full support to the UNAMID in its efforts to maintain stability, including through engagement with local communities. Endi
