8 mln people affected in Nepal by earthquake, says UN official

Xinhua, April 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

The United Nations said Tuesday that 8 million Nepali people of 39 districts are affected by the major earthquakes which hit across Nepal Saturday and Sunday.

The United Nations Resident Coordinator Jamie McGoldrick told media that of the 39 districts, 2 million are badly affected in 11 districts.

McGoldrick said that the United Nations is focusing its work in different areas such as water (wash), shelters, medicines and food.

"Around 1.4 million people of the country require food assistance at this time," he said.

The United Nations has allocated 15 million U.S. dollars to enable rapid scale-up of humanitarian operations in the Himalayan Country, the UN office said.

The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Nepal soared to 4, 555 and a total of 8,299 others were injured, the Nepal Police said. The 7.9-magnitude hit Nepal at midday on Saturday. The quake has also caused property damages worth billions of dollars. Endi
