Kenyan police arrested a suspected terrorist on Tuesday in Wajir County in the country's northeast region.
The man, whose identity was not immediately established, was arrested by anti-terrorism police near the county's Islamic relief office.
Wajir County Commissioner Fredric Shisia, who confirmed the arrest, said the police found three individuals who were caught unawares before they started running. He said fierce exchange of gunfire between the two sides ensued, and in the process, two of the suspected terrorists escaped on foot.
"It is still too early to tell what their mission was. We will however get to know that in the soonest time possible. In the meantime, we are still holding the suspect who will assist us nail his accomplices," Shisia said.
According to eye witnesses, the three young men who looked suspicious were on mission to study the area, which has residential houses mainly inhabited by non locals, to carry out an attack in the evening.
Following the incident, the local military officers, whose camp is a few meters away, immediately responded and condoned off the area. No weapon or criminal was, however, found in the area.
The incident has sparked tension in the region, with some county staff sustained minor injuries when scampered for safety. The office is 50 meters from where the incident took place.
Insecurity in northeastern Kenya has been a thorn in the flesh of the government as it grapples to find a lasting solution to it.
