Quotable quotes from NPT Review Conference at UN Headquarters in New York

Xinhua, April 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Following is the quotable quotes from the 2015 Review Conference of the Parties to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which opened here Monday:

"The 2015 Review Conference is of historical significance, as 2015 marks the 70th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the end of the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 45th anniversary of the NPT entry into force and the 20th anniversary of the indefinite extension of the treaty. As an important component of the post-world war international security system, the treaty has stood the test of changing international landscape, and made important contribution to the endear of upholding international peace, security and stability." -- Li Baodong, Chinese vice foreign minister and head of the Chinese delegation.

"The objectives of the NPT on non-proliferation and peaceful uses of nuclear energy have generally been met. The NPT has effectively contained the possibility that more countries develop nuclear weapons. Almost two thirds of the world's countries are parties of nuclear weapons-free zones." -- Juan Manuel Gomez Robledo, vice foreign minister of Mexico.

"Italy is committed to achieve a successful outcome of this conference based on consensus. The 2010 Action Plan remains, in our view, a valid benchmark upon which we should build our future deliberations." -- Benedetto Della Vedova, deputy minister for foreign affairs and international cooperation of Italy.

"A treaty is no longer a treaty without the commitment and compliance of the parties. This point cannot be over-emphasized for the NPT because this is not just another treaty. It is the one treaty which constitutes the very foundation of international peace and security, and that binds us all for a common cause of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons." -- Shin Dong-il, deputy minister for multilateral and global affairs of South Korea.
