Slovenian motorcyclists call for safe driving

Xinhua, April 28, 2015 Adjust font size:

Nearly 3,000 Slovenian bikers gathered in Nova Stifta, about 45 kilometers south of Ljubljana, on Monday in a bid to promote safe and moderate driving while curbing traffic accidents involving bikers.

Some 2,500 euros (2,722 U.S. dollars) were collected in the event for biker victims of traffic accidents and their families, said organizers.

A total of 50,000 euros were raised and distributed for the purpose in the last 10 years, according to Pavel Hocevar of the "Bikers for Bikers" association.

Slovenia, with a population of 2.04 million, has been keeping fairly good traffic order and system. Yet drunk driving, speeding, and driving in the wrong lane remain the most common causes of serious traffic accidents in the country.

Thirty percent of traffic accidents were the result of reckless driving that overlooks bikers and cyclists on the road, Hocevar said.

At least 23 people have been killed in Slovenia since the beginning of 2015, according to police statistics. Endit
