No respite as snow continues in Tibet

Snow will continue in China's Tibet Autonomous Region till Monday, adding pressure to the rescue work there.

A forecast by the National Meteorological Center (NMC) said snow and storms has already hit parts of the Tibetan region by Sunday and more snow and showers are expected on Monday.

A 8.1-magnitude quake shook Nepal at 2:11 p.m. (Beijing Time) on Saturday, killing at least 1,800 people. The quake also strongly affected some parts of Tibet, adjacent to Nepal.

Death toll in Tibet stands at 17, local authorities said on Sunday. A total of 53 people were injured and about 12,000 have been evacuated, according to rescuers.

Data from the country's weather observatory showed rainstorms south of the Yangtze River on Sunday evening. Torrential rains will sweep parts of Guizhou Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest.

Temperatures in north and northeast regions will be higher than average for the time of year. Most parts of north and northeast China will see temperatures climb above 30 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The NMC also said that lightening and hail will strike parts of Shaanxi and Gansu provinces in the northwest on Sunday evening and afternoon. Thunderstorms and strong winds will hit parts of north China and areas along the Yellow, Huai and Yangtze rivers on Monday and Tuesday.
