1st Ld: Kathmandu airport closed after strong quake, all flights canceled

The Kathmandu airport was shut on Saturday following a strong earthquake which struck the country earlier in the day, with all the flights canceled for now.

Xie Bin, a Chinese tourist told Xinhua that he and around 200 fellow Chinese tourists were trapped in the airport, waiting for further notice.

Two Chinese nationals were confirmed killed in the quake in Nepal, Chinese embassy told Xinhua earlier.

Xie said that he and his follow tourists were now safe, adding that he saw severe damage along the way to the airport.

After the 7.8-magnitude quake, the historic Dharahara, the highest tower in Kathmandu valley collapsed, and hundred of casualties were feared in the capital. A series of aftershocks followed after the major jolt. Endi
