1st LD: Over 100 people killed in Nepali quake

More than 100 people have been killed in a powerful earthquake which hit large arts of Nepal on Saturday, including dozens in capital Kathmandu, sources here said.

Around a dozen bodies were seen taken away from the ruins of the Dharhara tower in the center of the Nepali capital which sustained massive damage when the 7.8-magnitude quake struck at 11: 45 a.m. local time.

The tower was razed to the ground and there were reports of people trapped underneath the rubbles.

Dozens of the injured people have been brought to the main hospital in central Kathmandu, reports said.

In Kathmandu, 71 have been reported dead so far, and another 43 dead in the nearby Bhaktapur district, according to the Home Ministry.

National radio warned people to stay outdoors and keep calm as more aftershocks were feared. A 6.6-magnitude aftershock struck about an hour after the initial tremor.

The strong quake, with at least 14 after-shocks, also jolted several parts of India, and was felt in Malaysia, Bangladesh and Pakistan.

At least 11 people have been killed in India and Prime Minister Narendra Modihas convened a high-level meeting with ministers as well as top officials in the wake of the quake.

The powerful tremor also killed two people and injured over 100 in Bangladesh, police said. Endi
