NATO seeks to deepen cooperation with Australia

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg on Friday underscored that the current security environment has increased the need for increased dialogue and cooperation between NATO and Australia.

Stoltenberg made the remarks when he welcomed Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop to NATO headquarters for talks on issues of mutual interest, and on strengthening the NATO-Australia relationship.

Calling Australia a natural partner for the Alliance, Stoltenberg thanked Bishop for Australia's close cooperation with the Alliance, including its participation in NATO led operations.

Australia is one of the five partners, alongside Finland, Georgia, Jordan and Sweden, which are identified as making particularly significant contributions to NATO operations.

NATO and Australia signed an Individual Partnership and Cooperation Programme in February 2013. At the 2014 Wales Summit, NATO further acknowledged Australia as a valuable, capable and reliable partner through recognition as an enhanced partner. Endit
