Road casualties in Austria hits record low in 2014

Xinhua, April 24, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of fatalities on Austrian roads hit a record low of 430 people out of 37,957 accidents in 2014, Statistics Austria revealed Thursday.

The figure represents a decrease of 25 fatalities from 2013, or 5.5 percent fewer, and is the lowest since the statistic was first recorded in 1961.

Statistics Austria stated the first half of 2014 showed a trend toward an increasing number of road casualties but this was then offset by significant declines in July and August.

Men once again featured significantly higher in the fatalities figures, making up 315 of the 430 deaths, equal to 73 percent. In the 16 to 30-year-old age group this increased further to 87 percent.

Of the total fatalities, 44 percent occurred in car accidents, 21 percent on two-wheeled motor vehicles, 17 percent on foot, and 10 percent on a bicycle, with the remaining eight percent from other accidents such as trucks or tractor-related deaths.

The 71 pedestrians killed also represented a record low, while the 45 cyclists killed represented an overall decrease, despite an increased number of bicycle-related accidents.

The number of alcohol-related accidents also increased by six percent from 2013 to reach 2,213, with 32 people killed as a result, one more than the year prior. Endit
