Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Sri Lanka on Thursday thanked China for the assistance given to the island nation, particularly in defense and development.

Sri Lanka's State Minister of Defense Ruwan Wijewardene expressed his gratitude to China when Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka Yi Xianliang paid a courtesy call on him at the Sri Lanka Defence Ministry. "During the meeting a cordial discussion was held between the minister and the visiting Ambassador on matters of mutual interest and bilateral relevance. Meanwhile, Minister Wijewardene expressed his gratitude for the continuous assistance of China on matters relating to defense and development," the Defense Ministry said in a statement following the talks.

Minister Wijewardene also expressed good wishes to the Chinese official and mementoes were also exchanged between both officials to mark the occasion.

The Chinese government is also a major contributor to development work in Sri Lanka, particularly with the construction of a coal power station providing over 50 percent of the country's electricity, over 1,000 km high ways and expressways, two mega ports and a new airport. Endi
