Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

Shanghai Alstom Transport, the joint venture of Alstom and Shanghai Rail Traffic Equipment Development Co. Ltd, has won a contract worth 72 million euros(77.84 million U.S. dollars) to build 30 Citadis trams for the two first tramway lines in Shanghai.

The trams are expected to be put into service by 2017 on Shanghai Tramways T1 and T2, covering a total distance of 31 km. The trams have a capacity of transporting 173,000 passengers a day.

"Alstom and its partner are pleased to have been selected by Shanghai for the supply of Citadis trams, which will contribute to enhancing the city's transport services and energize urban life, while contributing to the protection of the environment," said Fang Ling, managing director of Alstom Transport China.

"Alstom will contribute to this ambitious tramway development plan with its worldwide experience and expertise in tram technology," Fang added.

French Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that the contract demonstrates the vitality of bilateral cooperation after the ninth visit of Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius to China in January 2015, the state visit of the French President to China in 2013 and and Chinese President's state visit to France in 2014.

The city of Shanghai plans to build 800 km of tramway network by 2020. Enditem
