commends financial support worth 950 mln USD in fight against Ebola

ADDIS ABABA, April 23 (Xinhua) - - The African Union (AU) has commended the latest financial support worth 950 million U.S. dollars in the fight against Ebola.

Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Chairperson of the AU Commission, commended the latest financial support bequeathed by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and the World Bank Group (WBG) in the fight against Ebola, said a statement from AU on Thursday.

The funds, 300 million dollars from AfDB and 650 million dollars from WBG, will be used to restore social and economic stability to the three Ebola-affected countries in West Africa by improving existing health facilities, advancing the supply of electricity, water and sanitation and upgrading and maintaining the road systems, noted the statement.

The funds will be allocated in accordance with the agreements signed by the three heads of State of Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone and the funders, according to the statement.

Liberia, Guinea and Sierra Leone are the three hardest-hit West African countries by the Ebola epidemic.

With the establishment of the African Union Support to Ebola in West Africa (ASEOWA), AU has been making efforts to address the epidemic.

Under ASEOWA mission, the pan African bloc has deployed health workers from member states in the three affected countries to deal with the problem. Endi
