Tokyo shares end higher on optimism over corporate earnings

Tokyo shares ended higher on Thursday with its benchmark Nikkei stock index hitting a fresh 15- year high, as sentiment here was lifted by optimism on upcoming earnings report here.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average ended up 53.75 points, or 0. 27 percent, from Wednesday to 20,187.65, the highest close since April 2000.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange was up 3.08 points, or 0.19 percent, to 1,624. 87.

Gainers were led by shipping, mining and brokerage issues.

The turnover was about 2,919.8 billion yen (about 24.39 billion U.S. dollars). Endi
