Quake rattles New Zealand capital

Xinhua, April 23, 2015 Adjust font size:

New Zealand's capital was shaken by a 5.1-magnitude earthquake Thursday, but no injuries or damage have been reported.

The government's GeoNet monitoring service initially reported the quake as magnitude 5.2 just after it struck at 10:42 a.m. just to the east of the town of Seddon in the northeast of the South Island.

The quake was at a depth of 24 km and GeoNet described its intensity as strong.

A smaller quake of 4.4 magnitude struck in the same area just six minutes earlier.

Trains in Wellington came to a halt for 20 minutes due to the earthquakes, Radio New Zealand reported.

Seddon was hit by a series of earthquakes in late 2013, the largest of which measured 6.6 and caused considerable damage to the town. Endi
