Spain receives 10.6 mln int'l tourists in Q1

Spain received a total of 10.6 million international tourists in the first quarter of the year which meant a 5.3 percent increase compared with the same period a year earlier, the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Energy and Tourism reported on Wednesday.

The number of tourists from Britain reached 2.1 million, 9.5 percent up on the same period of a year earlier, accounting for 18.9 percent of the total. They were followed by the Germans whose arrivals increased by 1.2 percent to 1.6 million accounting for 15.6 percent of the total.

The number of tourists from France fell by 0.6 percent to 1.6 million and accounted for 15.5 percent of the total, while the arrivals from the Nordic countries fell by 6.3 percent and accounted for 10.7 percent of the total to 1.1 million visitors.

The Nordics were followed by the Italians, whose arrivals increased by 16.9 percent to 639,21 tourists.

Visitors chose the archipelago of the Canary Islands as the main destination in the first three months of the year. The islands received a total of 3.1 million international tourists in the first quarter, a 0.8 percent more than in the same period of a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the tourists' second choice was the northeastern region of Catalonia whose arrivals represented 25.3 percent of the total receiving 2.7 million visitors, 5.2 percent more in comparison with a year earlier. Endit
