Fifth edition of the "Month of Europe in Alsace" launched in Strasbourg

The French region of Alsace launched the fifth edition of the "Month of Europe in Alsace" here on Monday.

The month-long initiative, which will run until May 31, was created by the president of the Regional Council of Alsace, Philippe Richert, in 2011 to help foster knowledge and understanding of European culture and values in the region.

"The Month of Europe aims to raise Alsatians' awareness of European values by celebrating Europe and its projects," the Regional Council announced in a press release on Monday.

Activities and events planned throughout the month will include projections of films from Ukraine, Moldova, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Bulgaria, as well as forums, conferences, and a European-themed photography contest.

The fifth edition of the initiative will also commemorate the 60th anniversary of the European flag, which was adopted in 1955 as the flag of the Council of Europe (CoE), with an exposition from May 1 until May 31 at the CoE seat in Strasbourg.

Situated along France's border with Germany, Alsace benefits from cross-border exchange, and also acts as host to several international institutions, such as the CoE, the European Parliament (EP), and the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), all of which have seats here. Endit
