Press watchdog condemns murder of Ukrainian journalist

Xinhua, April 17, 2015 Adjust font size:

The Geneva-based Press Emblem Campaign (PEC) on Thursday strongly condemned the killing of a prominent Ukrainian journalist, Oles Buzina, 45, known for his pro-Russian views.

The journalist, until March the editor-in-chief of a local newspaper, was reported as being shot dead on Thursday in Kiev by two masked gunmen.

"Whatever the motivations are, journalists must be spared from being targeted because of political rivalries," the PEC said, adding that a quick, transparent, independent and thorough investigation must be immediately conducted by the Ukrainian authorities.

According to the organization, Oles Buzina is the 39th journalist killed around the world since the beginning of 2015, and the 12th journalist killed in Ukraine since the start of the civil conflict.

Founded in June 2004 by a group of journalists from several countries, PEC is a non-governmental organization with special consultative UN status, whose aim is to strengthen the legal protection and safety of journalists in zones of conflict and civil unrest or in dangerous missions. Endit
