Austria sees steady growth of tourists from Asia

Xinhua, April 16, 2015 Adjust font size:

The number of Asian tourists visiting Austria has increased 140 percent since 2009 to reach 1.6 million visitors in 2014, the Austrian National Tourism Office (OeW) said in a press release on Wednesday.

Klaus Ehrenbrandtner from the OeW said during that five year span the number of overnight hotel stays from Asian visitors also increased 125 percent.

Asian guests thus made up 4.3 percent of total visitors in 2014, more than double the 2 percent they made up in 2009. The growth rate in the visitors from Asia has also been higher than those from other European countries, a trend the OeW expects to continue in the future.

China has proven to be the largest source of tourists from Asia with nearly 500,000 visitors in 2014, followed by Japan with 245,000 visitors, and South Korea with 235,000 visitors.

The most popular destinations were the national capital Vienna with 39 percent of the total visitors, followed by the state of Salzburg with 24 percent, and Tyrol with 22 percent.

The OeW said it has been using various innovative means of advertising in Asian markets, such as through targeted apps on smartphones and tablets. Endi
