The representatives of Czech, Polish and Slovak parliaments on Tuesday voiced support for the construction of the Southern Gas Corridor, through which gas would flow from Azerbaijan via Georgia, Turkey and the Balkan states, to the European Union (EU).
They made the remarks at a meeting held in Prague on Tuesday.
The representatives of Hungary, which is also a member of the Visegrad Group (V4), did not attend the meeting as the Hungarian parliament is currently in session.
The representatives agreed at the meeting that the decision on what sources of energy a country would use should remain a national issue.
Czech representative Vaclav Hampl said this was not an issue for all-European regulation. However, he said broader cooperation in the EU would be helpful in the development of the energy transmission systems, and joint energy purchases should be considered as well.
Polish representative Edmund Wittbrodt said connections between the pipelines enabling reverse flow of gas and oil between EU countries and possibly to Ukraine needed to be built.
The Southern Gas Corridor, including both existing and future pipelines, aims to bring new central Asian gas supplies to Europe and thus lower the EU's energy dependence on Russia. It could replace the failed Nabucco pipeline project and the Russian project South Stream. Endit
