Confidential emails of Finnish prime minister's office hacked

Confidential emails related to the official duties of the Finnish prime minister's office have been accessed by unauthorized parties, the office said on Tuesday.

According to a press release, emails concerning sanctions being prepared in the European Union were hacked last weekend. The cyber security breach took place during the tenure of previous government between from June 2011 and June 2014.

Confidential emails sent by former prime minister Jyrki Katainen, his aide and the state secretary were stolen and attempted to be distributed to media, Markku Mantila, director of the communications at the prime minister's office, said.

Mantila said the hack was discovered when the emails had been offered to representatives of the media, adding that at least one media source had expressed interest in the information.

He revealed that the leaked information was about the renewed EU sanctions against Russia. However, he declined to comment on the significance of the information.

The prime minister's office said Finnish authorities were investigating a number of personal computers, but did not divulge who the owners of the computers were. Endit
